The Bible and Real Estate

As a christian I’ve struggled a lot with real estate investing and how to honor Jesus, while growing wealthy lending and investing in real estate.  I am a very ambituous person and sometimes the world can takeover and I can get caught-up in things that aren’t important.  All the while, the famous verse in Mathew where Jesus warned how it was hard for rich people to get into heaven:

[Tweet “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. Mathew 19:23”]

The bible has taught me a lot on how to deal with this which I will get too later.  But four real estate investors who I have watched and followed for years do a tremendously great job with teaching people how to be both a Christian and a real estate investor.

Those four investors are Cory Boatright,J.P. Moses, Chris Clothier and Bob Lotich.

Corey Boatright has made it in the real estate world being proficient in short-sales.  However, I first met Cory through a consulting call and he helped my real estate business in multiple ways.  He runs several different businesses but the one I’m most familiar with is:

J.P. Moses runs so many businesses it would be a blog post in-itself.  But his main website is where I love his statement of faith which you can read here:

Chris Clothier runs Memphis Invest.  I was very fortunate to meet Chris several months ago at his company’s headquarters and was completely blow-away by the culture that he and his family have built there.  Turn-key management companies have the worst reputation in the real estate business.  I believe MemphisInvest has succeeded because it operates completely different than it’s peer group.  Their main website is here:

Bob Lotch is the only person on this list I haven’t actually talked with.  Bob runs  The information he and his writers share is not only practical and educational but also encouraging and actionable.  I love getting emails from him and his team with new content.

Obviously, the verse above is a major warning from Jesus himself to not get caught-up in the material of the world.  I think it’s also important to point out some other versus where God warns against being lazy.  Below are some basic points the bible lay’s out that I think all Christian real estate investor’s (and all Christians) should be mindful of.

God Owns It All

For every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. I know every bird in the mountains, and the insects in the fields are mine. – Psalm 50:10-11 NIV

God Hates Laziness

Poor is he who works with a negligent hand, but the hand of the diligent makes rich. – Proverbs 10:4 NIV

A sluggard’s appetite is never filled, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied. – Proverbs 13:4 NIV

God Loves A Cheerful Giver

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. – 2 Corinthians 9:7 NIV

God Calls Us To Work

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters . . . . – Colossians 3:23 NIV
